7. Some 16,000 animals live in the Baltimore and Washington, D.C., buildings that make up the National Aquarium, which reigns as America’s first aquarium.

8. Located on the site of a former sardine cannery on the Pacific Ocean, the Monterey Bay Aquarium pumps fresh ocean water into its exhibits.

9. Atlanta’s Georgia Aquarium boasts more animals than any other in the world. Aquatic creatures from oceans, rivers and the tropics thrive in some 8 million gallons of water.

10. The environmentally innovative Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, Calif., houses more than 11,000 ocean animals in 19 habitats.

Unless otherwise noted, standard business hours in this guide are as follows. Businesses are open from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday. Banks are open 8:30am to 4:30pm Monday to Thursday, until 5:30pm Friday. Some post offices and banks are also open from 9am to noon or 1pm on Saturday.

Stores are open 10am to 6pm Monday to Saturday, noon to 5pm Sunday. In malls and downtown shopping areas, hours may be extended to 8pm or 9pm. Malkoun’s legal team asked District Court Judge Susan Bolton for more time to investigate the allegations against him and the judge agreed, pushing the 53-year-old’s trial in Phoenix, Arizona, from May 3 to July 5.

Malkoun remains locked up in an Arizona jail after another judge at a March 25 bail hearing in Phoenix deemed him a “serious flight risk”.

“The reason for the continuance is to allow additional time for investigation and trial preparation,” Malkoun’s lawyer David Titterington said in the request to Judge Bolton.

Judge Bolton responded “the failure to grant such a continuance would unreasonably deny” Malkoun and his lawyers time to prepare their defence.

Malkoun, who was sentenced to an 18-year jail term in Victoria in 1988 for his role in a multi-million dollar Australian heroin trafficking ring, arrived in the US on March 13 on a 90-day tourist visa and, according to US prosecutors, failed to acknowledge his trafficking conviction in his entry papers.

Malkoun was arrested after an undercover operation by the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) at an Arizona gun show on March 20 observed Malkoun allegedly buy a Smith and Wesson handgun from two individuals selling firearms from the rear of a pick-up truck.

A search of Malkoun’s rental car also allegedly found a Sig Sauer .45 calibre pistol and a Colt model Mustang Pocket Light .38 calibre pistol.
